The area now known as Tahoe Donner has a rich history that dates back to the Washoe people, who were the original inhabitants. During the summer months, the Washoe tribes would explore the area to fish its waters, hunt local species, and gather natural resources. As the colder weather approached, they would move to milder climates below the mountains. The Washoe people had a deep connection with the land, using it sustainably for generations.
In the 1850s, the land became a commodity for European settlers following the gold and silver rushes. The Comstock era of logging saw the land, once abundant with large fir and pine trees, being converted into a wood supply for mining timbers, railroads, and building materials. By the 1920s, much of the landscape had been harvested, and the area was left with a significant fuel buildup due to the lack of fire awareness.
In the 1960s, Jack Kirby purchased 4,020 acres from a Christmas tree farmer in Truckee, California. By 1971, he had developed the Tahoe Donner Resort, opening it to the public. The resort was envisioned as a family-friendly destination, offering various recreational activities.
Today, Tahoe Donner is one of America’s largest homeowner’s associations, encompassing 6,473 properties and more than 23,000 members. The community spans over 7,000 acres in the Sierra Nevada mountains and offers a wide range of amenities and activities. Residents and visitors can enjoy skiing, hiking, golfing, and more, making it a popular destination year-round. The area has evolved into a modern community with a strong focus on outdoor recreation and environmental sustainability. Tahoe Donner’s amenities include a private beach club and marina on Donner Lake, the Alder Creek Adventure Center, a golf course, walking trails in the Euer Valley, the Trout Creek Recreation Center, and the Club House.
In the winter, the area offers alpine and cross-country skiing, snow play, and other winter sports.
In recent years, Tahoe Donner has continued to develop and improve its facilities. For example, the Town of Truckee Planning Commission recently approved a development permit for a new three-story, 24,490-square-foot lodge at the downhill ski area. This new lodge will provide easier access to lifts and dedicated indoor ski school space3. Additionally, successful and progressive wetland restoration projects have been created in partnership with organizations like the Truckee River Watershed Council. Projects include the Nature Loop Trail Restoration Project and the Euer Valley Restoration Project.
Tahoe Donner continues to be a vibrant community that honors its rich history while providing a wide range of activities and amenities for its residents and visitors. The area’s commitment to preserving its natural beauty and promoting outdoor recreation makes it a unique and cherished destination.
